WELLAND – The Hamilton Cardinals dropped the series opener against the Welland Jackfish on Friday night, falling 12-6 at Welland Stadium in front of 3,298 fans. The Cardinals jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. They added three more in the third and pushed across single runs in the fifth and seventh. But the Jackfish answered every time, starting with a three-run first of their own. Welland pulled ahead for good with two runs in the fourth and tacked on two more in the fifth. The Jackfish broke it open with four runs in the eighth, turning a close game into a 12-6 final. Brandon Nicoll led the Cardinals offence with three hits and two runs scored. Darlin German, Evan Magill and Dario Borrero each drove in two runs. Angel Guerrero added three hits in a busy night at the bottom of the order. Hector Yan took the loss, allowing six runs over four and two-thirds innings while striking out six. The Cardinals continue their road trip Sunday afternoon with a 4:05 p.m. matchup against the London Majors.
